Coaching and Lessons

Kings Meadow offers coaching services from beginner to advanced riders. If you are looking to fine-tune your skills or solve an issue with your horse, we will work with you one-on-one to instil solid fundamentals and improve the connection between you and your horse. We teach horsemanship techniques which promotes partnership between horse and rider. With the philosophy that the horse cannot move properly until the rider is positioned properly, head coach Ashley Van der Hout teaches riders how their body affects their horses' movement.

If you are interested in lessons at Kings Meadow, please complete our LESSON INQUIRIES form and we will contact you with more information.
Our lesson programs are varied. Length of lessons are a minimum of 45 minutes, with each lesson tailored to the individual horse and rider, and consideration given to current ability and future goals. For outside clients who do not own their own horse, we offer show quality horses who are professionally schooled on a weekly basis. Riders are paired with the horse that best suits their ability and goals.

Our lesson program for junior riders, 4 years of age and up, is tailored to accommodate private or semi-private lessons. Our junior coaches will prepare students for more advanced training with Ashley Van der Hout. Lessons can be private or semi-private and run from 45 to 60 mins in length. Semi-private lessons may only have up to a maximum of 3 riders.

Get answers to these questions before choosing a facility or coach.
  • Did you meet with the coach ahead of your first lesson and get a tour of the facility?

At Kings Meadow, we want to learn as much about the rider as possible ahead of the first lesson. Before lessons start, we meet with the rider for a facility tour and to learn about past riding experience, goals, fears, medical issues that may need attention while riding, discuss clothing for riding and helmet fitting.

During the facility tour, the rider will be shown the stables, the indoor and outdoor arenas, viewing area, paddocks, quarantine stalls, and shown where the lesson horses' tack is kept. Riders will also be told the rules of the barn and show you where they're posted around the facility.

Before your first lesson, King's Meadow's Lesson Waiver of Liability Release Form will need to be completed. We will take the time to explain the different sections to you during your first visit.

  • Does the facility follow a rider program?

Kings Meadow has implemented a Beginner Level Theory and Riding program that includes riding, horse care and horsemanship for Hunter, Jumper, Dressage, Equitation and Western.

The program is designed for students currently taking riding lessons and are steadfast in an ongoing commitment to equestrian activities.

It is necessary for all students to successfully complete all levels consecutively prior to attending a more advanced theory class (if theory is part of their program).

All students are able to take part if theory classes. Theory classes are held either immediately prior to or immediately following a cloaching session. Some theory will be offered throughout the year on designated weekends.

Riders participating in the program will receive a binder to track accomplishments and details of the KMEC riding program.

  • What is the facility's / head coach's philosophy and approach during riding lessons?

At KMEC, our emphasis is on the ongoing education of a well-rounded rider. Horse knowledge outside the ring is as important as horse knowledge inside the ring. We teach horsemanship techniques which promote partnership between horse and rider. With the philosophy that the horse can't move properly until the rider is positioned properly, head coach Ashley Van der Hout teaches riders how their body affects their horses' movement.

  • What are the qualifications of the coaches?

KMEC Riding Academy's head coach and owner, Ashley Van der Hout, has extensive training in hunter equitation, jumpers, dressage and western pleasure. Ashley started riding at a very young age, and became committed by the age of 6-years-old when recognized in Germany for her natural talent.

Since then, she has continued her career in the equine field and trains with a European style to riding. Currently, Ashley is working toward competition coach specialist certification.

Ashley has trained under multiple recognized trainers, inheriting different techniques and broadening her perspective and training abilities. If you have been unable to reach your goal in the past, there is a way and she will uncover that path to success by enhancing the ability of horse and rider.

    NCCP Certified Instructor Riley Denoon

Riley was brought into riding through the Canadian Pony Club when she was nine. This is when she started to learn valuable horsemanship and stable management skills. Later on she started competing on the A Circuit in the medal classes, hunters and jumpers. She completed her full NCCP Instructor Certification with the jump module in the summer of 2019.

Canadian Pony Club Certified instructor Shalom Leger

Shalom is an accomplished horsewoman who has been competing since the age of seven. While she predominantly competes in 3-Day-Eventing, she also enjoys challenging herself in the Dressage and Hunter-Jumper rings (2nd Level and 1.10m, respectively). She has competed across Canada - from Nova Scotia to British Columbia - as well as in the United States and Australia. She holds two CPC National Championships in Dressage, and has worked and trained with internationally recognized coaches including Canadian, U.S. and British veterans of the Olympics, the World Equestrian and Pan Am Games. Shalom holds health care provider level First Aid and CPR certifications, and is currently in the process of copleting her Canadian Pony Club "A" level certification, and is a popular coach, clinician and mentor.

You can ask to see coaching certificates at any time when you're at Kings Meadow.

  • Do your coaches have liability insurance?

Absolutely! Kings Meadow has full liability insurance for its coaches through BFL Canada.

  • What types of horses are used for lessons?

KMEC has a large variety of horses (ponies, thoroughbreds, draft cross, etc.) for our lesson program. You can view our current Lesson Team below.

  • Was the facility's waiver of liability explained to you?

Before your first lesson, King's Meadow's Lesson Waiver of Liability Release Form will need to be completed.

Our release form includes a waiver of liability, visitor release statement and photo release statement. We will take the time to explain the different sections to you during your first visit and answer any questions.

Our Lesson Team

Gentry

16.1hh Imported Azteca. He has done literally everything from bullfighting in Portugal, Dressage, western pleasure, winning Ontario competitive trail, and now continuing his career in the dressage, hunter and jumper rings for our competitors.

Bella

13.2hh Welsh cross who showed competitively on the OHJA, qualified to show at The Royal Winter Fair her last years of showing. She has joined our team a 6 years ago to progress children and young adults in the show ring.

Indy

15.3hh paint cross. One of our long time trustworthy, loyal, solid mount. As a 3year old he was trained for western pleasure in the US, and came to us to be trained in English disciplines. To this day, he has shown dressage, western dressage, hunters and jumpers. Indy has a special spot in a lot of our riders and past riders hearts. He’s brought so many riders up levels at such a young age as a mount.

Bullet

15hh quarter horse. We’ve been very fortunate to have known Bullet for over 10 years and then have the pleasure and honour to call him “one of ours”. His owner Katherine has been a client of ours since 2005. These two had competed in western games and he was also one of the horses on The Canadian Cowgirls Drill team. Bullet now is one of our main mounts for beginners as young as 3yrs old.

Diva

16hh TB cross. She has been with us and trained by Ashley since she was 4 months old. She has done hunters, Dressage and western dressage. She is used for our intermediate to advanced lessons. Diva has a big personality and loves to show off

Zoey

16.3hh TB. Zoey is another one of our trustworthy, dependent, and solid mount. She has mainly competed in hunters and still does with some dressage under her belt.

Dispatch

16.3hh solid draft cross. At his young age, Ashley trained him at a max height of 4’ for his owner. Circumstances changed and we took him over. He was further trained for jumpers, but found his dream in the hunter ring.

Poco

15.2hh Paint. She was trained western pleasure and was a broodmare. She can stand all day being groomed and loved by our little ones. Poco is in our beginner lesson program as well.

Boomer

16.2hh TB joined our team in December 2019 to show and help young adults enhance their abilities at home and at shows.

Dusty

13.2hh Paint Welsh cross is new to our team in January 2020; he's rising 4 years old. He will be working with young riders and with the YMCA camp along side his fellow teammates.

Duke

15.2hh Paint and he loves to work. Ridden by novice to intermediate youth, western or English. He's still trying to master the hunter ring, but he's determined and it will come!

Peaches

We have more mounts for our advanced riders in Hunters and Dressage disciplines. All horses can be part boarded if they’re available. Showing is a possibility with each of our horses with their suitable rider.
